Equal Access to the 'Opportunity' Classroom.
Story by Hill
Over recent years programs for gifted and talented students have increased dramatically in the USA. The programs are varied and include acceleration, gifted centres and pull out programs. Only a small percentage of students are accepted and they are required to pass IQ tests and interviews. Many parents believe that education for the gifted is the only place for their child and battle with the relevant authorities to ensure that their child is accepted. However this emphasis on gifted programs has created many problems and has many critics.
Three main problems which the programs present are: 1) The selection process 2) Students who miss out and 3)Equality. Many researchers state that there is no evidence that a students academic performance is enhanced through gifted programs. Another arguement is that the funding should be spent on enhancing mainstream education and teaching strategies.

本帖最后由 三T上人 于 2016-7-22 19:19 编辑

New South Wales primary schools also have classes specially for gifted and talented students. These are called opportunity classes (OC). On my recent visit to a primary school in Metropolitan Sydney I was able to gain information about opportunity classes through an interview with Mrs. Smith and through my own experiences.
On Monday the 15th of May, 2000 I handed out forms which contained an expression of interest for an opportunity class package. I had a class role and I needed to indicate who had not received this note. I was informed that if I did not do this then parents may complain that they did not receive the note. The note is sent back to the school and the parents receive the package in August. They fill out the relevant forms and wait for the selection process which includes a review panel. Family support is one particular aspect which the review panel considers. Only a small amount of students are accepted into the program. Therefore it is already noticeable that the same problems for the USA programs are emerging in the opportunity classes in NSW.
But what are the benefits of these opportunity classes and do the students benefit from such a program? Mrs Smith stated that mainstream classes require constant revision, careful explanations and comprehension/knowledge activities. Opportunity classes require more experiences with upper thinking skills, collaborative activities and mentoring programs. When asked whether the students benefit from the program Mrs Smith replied "It depends on the student. Most students use the opportunity to improve their learning and knowledge. Some students still expect everything to happen for them." Then those students who are not taking full advantage of the program have taken the place of a student who has missed out due to the selection process.
The selection process has serious consequences and creates inequality in the education system. As mentioned earlier one of the selection criteria is family support. It appears that a child may be exempt from such a program because their family is not able to support them. Also, for those students who miss out there may be negative consequences to their self esteem. Mrs Smith states "Many students (who miss out) go onto be equally successful, others see it as a social disgrace (also a cultural thing)." Therefore if students can go onto be equally successful in a mainstream classroom it is necessary to question the worth of opportunity classes.
Finally the funding which is spent on opportunity classes could be spent on improving mainstream education and teaching strategies. The opportunity class teachers skills and knowledge could be utilised in a mainstream classroom. The gifted and talented students could help their peers to learn in an exciting new way.
