The engineering treatment of soils involves improving their geotechnical
character for construction purposes. Problems regarding construction in soils
arise from their lack of strength which manifests itself in their deformation,
which beneath foundations takes the form of settlement, or in some exceptional
circumstances gives rise to ground failure. Problems are also associated with
water in soil. Hence soil treatment is primarily concerned with enhancing its
strength or reducing or excluding the water content. The techniques used to
improve soil conditions may be temporary or permanent. For example,
groundwater lowering techniques and freezing are generally temporary in nature
whilst grouting is permanent. Also some techniques have a long history whilst
others have evolved during the last 25 years, notably some of the methods of soil
reinforcement, and dynamic compaction. Moreover new techniques are
continually being developed.
Some of the techniques used to treat soils are highly specialized and as such may
not be very familiar to many of those involved with construction, notably civil
and structural engineers and engineering geologists, and to a lesser extent
builders and architects. Accordingly this text attempts to provide those in, or
intending to enter, the construction industry with a basic appreciation of the
various techniques concerned with soil treatment, under which circumstances a
particular technique will be used, and in which soil types a given method can be
used successfully.

International Conferences on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering are
mentioned frequently. These, together with specialist journals or conference
proceedings such as the Journal of Geotextiles and Geomembranes or the
international conferences on Ground Freezing and Geotextiles, provide
particularly worthwhile sources to keep one up to date.
